The Coffee Dragon needs your support! Please volunteer to perk and serve! It's a great way to serve the Tribe, meet new friends and catch up with old ones! Please email me if there's a time you'd like to serve, or visit the Dragon when you arrive! Thank you ahead of time!!

Hi Alex,
that is great news about the Drum and the activities you have planned around it. I am glad that you are picking FR as one of the events to do major construction with this project. The price seems reasonable as well.

There is a mention of your activites coming out in the Calendar on the FR page. Though I specifically left it a litle vague, prices and time(s) concerning the drum making can be presented on the web page, and in the Program for FR.

Very excited about this year :-)

I have a large cherry log that would make a beautiful Grandfather Drum for the drum circle at 4QF.
What I would like to do is have a series of workshops that would culminate in its completion at Drum & Splash.
Grandfather Drum Building - This drum would be approximately the size of a 55 gal barrel drum. I was thinking $7.00 per person per event to work on it, with a 21.00 fee to be involved in the whole process ( three events). Anyone in the workshop would be able on put their own symbology on the drum during the final phase. All the money collected would go toward the cost of materials and perhaps if there is extra, money for the creation of a permanent deck at the Earth Rhythm site.

First weekend - carving the drum into shape, chain saw, chiseling, maybe sanding. (Beltaine)

Second weekend - carving or painting sybology, sanding, staining, finishing. Putting the head on. (Fires Rising)

Third weekend - Tightening the drum, the Initiation, and playing it. (at Drum & Splash)

Share a Rhythm, Learn a Rhythm. Encourage attendees to share what they know. the purpose is to create group cohesion. We would learn rhythms others know and would then play them at the evening drumming.

Drumming like a village. develop skills of endurence, keeping rhythms alive. Feeling the life in a rhythm and building on it.

These are all loosely configured. Let me know what you think.
Alex

If it works we will,if it won't we will compromise. :-)

Chris, now don't I feel silly..... would you mind a kitchen thread? I would love to have one... as a matter of fact it would be beneficial to me to have a kitchen thread for each event !!!! I don't want to do that without the okay of the planner and the office.... so if someone will set me up a kitchen thread,
(until I get completely oriented on how this all works),I would be greatly appreciative.... then I will repost that Chris.... Peace, Rosalie :-( !!!

Hi Alex,
Yes, that is similar to my thoughts, though some of times may change and we are using sightly different terminology for the same thing.

For organizational purposes we broke down the groups into Elements. This means 5 affinity groups which will be composed of practical guilds. These are then sorted by their primary focus. e.g. Fire Guild - Rhythm Elders. It is a sort of marriage between your ideas and what we have as a framework already :-)

As we are not using more than one track of workshops, the attendee's can access 'more' of the festival and enriching their experience. Also different than FR past is that we are having the Old world Crafts presenters, so affinity circle/Guild activity will happen in a more condensed form this year. We have a process in the place to ensure the quality of the interaction between 'Helper' (def. a person who is leading a group). This streamlines the need for alot of talking and subsequent use of time :-)
In any event I think the Fire Guild/Rhythm Elders activities would take place on Fri & Sat. This guild will also need to have your supervision as you implement the Rhythm Elders initiation. I personally would like you to combine this with the 'Making music like a village.' and offer both in some fashion on both Fri. and Sat. slots

If some of this seems a little alien, take a read of information recently posted on the FR private planning thread. Those emails are a result of a long time friend and fellow mystic who attended the last 4 FR's discussing with me his insights into past FR's.

peace

Fox,
What do you think about a Meet & Greet Fri at 11AM to do a briefing of the weekend activities.
You, me, everyone, in a town hall meeting(1hr) Then second, a Breakout session for the various groups, rhythm makers, dancers, chanters, etc(1/2hr), so we could all bond in our various affinity groups. Lunch. After lunch then gather to Build the Magic Container. Then, Intro to Eco Alchemy. Then I could follow, third, with the Passages workshop at the end of the day, Friday, for those who have had an awakening to rhythm.. Participants in the passage would return Sat morning for a briefing of their tasks.
Sat. 8AM Drumbuilders gather to work on the grandfather drum.
Also Saturday , I like to do a Planetary playshop on Drumming as a Village
Saturday nite just before Opus begins, we'll initiate the initiates(15 mins).

Hi Alex (Chief Rhythm Elder) :-),
yes I like your theme. One aspect it reminds me of ......a technique in modern Psychology is to use a surrogate when working through an issue. In this case...the surrogate becomes ones drum/music (any instrument). So the idea you have checks out with me on a number of levels i.e. it is a proven and accepted way of helping someone transcend :-)

I imagine you will draw from you experience in how to put all this into practice. As you organize your thoughts in how "Rhythm Elders" is to be done. I encourage you to share this in planning. We will draw the various elements together to create the ritual content this year.
So your inspirations are an important ingredient.
Thanx,
Fox

Fox,
So what I hear you saying is, lets start with the rhythmmakers, and offer them an opportunity for a Rites of Passage experience. I could do a workshop called Passages - Entering the Fire Rhythm family. Open to those who have had a Calling, an Awakening, and to have the Village acknowledge this. Am I on track?

Fox,
I will be at the farm on Mar.7th. I have a meeting with Patty and Spiral Heart. If you will be around I would like a few words with you about food for FR. I will prepare an outline and you can tell me if I am on the right track and any other needs that I must include. My meeting with Patty is a 11am so can we say tenatively at 11:30. It shouldnt take long. I am not a procrastinator and I really like to get my plans in order...... thanks Rosalie

Post Script ~

Alex,

I would be very interested in seeing how you could enact your proposed Initiatory scheme within the realm of Music making. Something like taking a troubled person, or someone who recently experienced a loss, and bringing them from being a first time drummer to learning how to play within an ensamble. I believe this type of practical initiatory experience would bear great fruit into their own integration of personality, and alleviate the disconnect that happens in todays world.

Perhaps a Musicians ritual which would capitalize on this for Sat. Night?

Hi Alex and All,

The lack of meaningful Initiation activities is a major problem with our society at large. Many have pointed to it as being a major contributing cause of unwanted pregnancies, Teen violence, Drug addiction, the break up of the modern Family, and a host of other social ills. It has been for the last two years my own private focus which I meditate upon to seek answers to help those around me.

I applaud your outline Alex as being a general step in a direction that a sub rosa culture like ours needs to make in order to move towards an integrated wholeness which is lacking in the divest social structure of the U.S. and modern man. Yet the constructs which would need to be in place to achieve a meaningful Initiation by a group, may be more than the gathering of FR is capable of at this time. Again I do admire your point of view and the obviousness need for such rituals in life, it is not per se, where FR is heading at this time. Though in the future, if enough people wanted to make an Initiatory process happen, I would condone and take part in it. I also believe your inspiration is one which will come to bare fruit eventually.

From another perspective....we can see the meaning of Initiation to be "to begin something."
And we have a very full plate for this years FR in determining what issues we need to tackle in order to be true to the mission of what FR is.
And what is FR exactly?

In years past I have described the Alchemical Fire Circle as "a Neo Jungian interpretation of Alchemy applied as a framework in a Fire Circle wherein Music , Dance, and Song are the basis for intentional work for Spiritual transcendence and holistic healing." Obviously there are more than one way to skin a cat, and such is true in the pseudo-science of Alchemy.

Taking from the Lambspring Alchemy text, we discover that "Before the Alchemist can achieve the Great Work he must surrender to the force of Nature." This was my inspiration among the troubles of modern life (Environment issues) to focus this years activities on a new Alchemical format for FR. This I simply call "Eco-Alchemy."
Looking to the sustainable practices of our forefathers and Mothers to find a way to flourish in the future. This is the practical aspect of FR, which will be ritually tied into the nights events.

We now have on board, a Chef who will give demonstrations of Old world cooking; a Blacksmith who will give us his Alchemy of the Forge; a Glass blower who transmutes sand into functional art, and a Metalurgist who creates from the stones of the Earth. And if I may be presumptious, a Drum Master who will show us how to create music from items found in Nature (smile).

In any event...as I wrote above, I believe your thoughts on Initiatory ritual to be of prime importance for our world. It is a discussion which will bare fruit, and one I believe that could be a good topic to discuss with the Tribe.
But I feel it is also one which needs to have a bigger consensus than that of a small planning group for a Gathering :-) I certainly would be open to making it a topic for discussion or consideration at this years FR.

peace
Chris Fox Wallace

Hi, everyone,
Here is a general outline of a possible Rite Ceremony for Fires Rising. In working on this, I thought of this as a connecting theme for the weekend and not an exclusive event. I felt that other themes and other workshops could be going on concurrent to this proposal.
As this will be the first Fires staff run event, it may be a good opportunity to expand the Fires Rising concept as one for the whole village, a general community event. Joy and I have done a similar Rites of Passage Ceremony before and so I have modified it some to adapt it for Fires Rising.

Rites of Passage Fire Ceremony
Weekend Brief - Community based, member inspired, event designed to allow the members a chance to celebrate/acknowledge, changes in their lives, to the village. This event to be a Rites Ceremony for anyone having a transition happening in their life. Ex; birth, marriage, loss, awakening, etc.

The village consists of three groups.
The villagers or Village Players, which consist of drummers, dancers, singers and supporters.
The Initiates - those going through a life changing event.
The Elders - those wise enough to sit in the seat of power and not be swayed by the array of distractions around them.
(also the behind the scenes facilitators and logisitics team)

Friday
Preparation workshop for the initiates
Defining & Discovery - They will come together to discover & define the challenges of the Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Realms that lie before them. Sensitization exercises
An elder will meet, one on one, with an initiate to determine his or hers life position. Then later with the other elders, plot a course for the initiate. We may want each initiate to have a sponsorer.

Saturday
Elders Meeting to discuss what each initiate will need to complete their initiation. It may be a task they need to complete. It may be having one write their personal story, about when time disappeared. Or creating an object of art that represents this life change to them. Each will be given Special things to do.

Re-meet with the initiates - Elders to name the challenge or challenges that the initiate must face.
Initiates to spend day, sequestered, working on tasks, preparing a ritual, etc.

Village Players to meet discuss villagers role and musical format. Break into subgroups to work on rhythm, song, dance, etc.

Ceremony Format:

Initiation by the male elders - Create a sacred space where the initiates can get in touch with their Fears - Desires -Duty - Personal Gifts of Magic
Initiation by the female elders - Create a sacred space through intent and design. Dancing with Veils and the Naming Ceremony.

Welcoming ceremony by the village - Lead celebration to welcome and support the initiates entry into the community.

The party

Prepare the scene:
manage the cooking, setup- tear down, the party.

There are many parts that need to be filled for this event to occur. If Four Quarters members are willing, I believe with all the past experiences we have had at the Farm, the parts can be filled and the Ceremony completed. The rewards will be many.

Alex

I have stopped getting these messages for some reason. Aaagh! I am still committed to being invovled. I do need a solid date. I am becoming certified as a yoga teacher and cannot miss any of the dates. I am SOOOOO excited about the raw food thread as I have been striving for 80% raw all year. It has been an amazing journey.
