Chris since I am having to use my s.o.'s computer for now til I get mine down to Mike..... He saw me looking up Alchemy... Asked what I was doing and told him of you, the event and so on.. WELL !!! He asked me if you knew who Burthold was and all then gave me a 45 min lecture on Alchemy and Burthold. Not to my dismay by any reason.... I just find it amazing how much he and I do have in common and see him coming and helping at events more than I thought.... ex. Story he told me... Mr Schwartz dug a hole in the ground and lined it with brick then but some gunpowder in the bottom and covered it with a large rock... He proceeded to get a red hot poker and stick it into the gunpowder and blew the rock off the hole.... Immediately everyone said that he did magic and knew how to summon the devil. So the lectures I get are very informative and I thought that maybe we could use some of his expertise, so to say pick his brain, for lack of better words. I don't want to seem to be pushing him on you but I find him very interesting and I think Orren does to... He might give you some unusual insight..... Okay I am off my soap box now..... Looks like I might be coming to the farm on Sat... WOW the week got away from me

Rosalie, I'm one of the raw-foodies Fox mentioned (appreciate the mention Fox!). We're actually pretty easy to please. We eat lots of greens (everything but iceberg lettuce), whole fruits, (raw) nuts and seeds...very simple stuff and these are things that other people eat as well. I know that its a lot of work to feed so many people so I don't want to add to your workload. If there is nothing for us but a fatty salad and some fruit we'd be satisfied with that and will bring along some food of our own to round out our meals there. If you have interest you can find out more about raw foods here: http://rawfoods.com/faq.html It's quite an interesting way of looking at food. :-)

Hi Rosalie,
im in communication with one couple who will be giving a short discussion on 'Green Eating'. They eat non processed raw foods. I am also trying to figure a way to have 'Safe serve' food bar for the event. These would be foods that could eaten at night. The Fire Rising event is one which much activity is focused on an all night Fire circle which does not break until dawn of Sunday morn.

With some planning we can figure out a way to get nourishment to these intrepid spiritual travellers :-) Well thats a couple of points, serving times for the meals will be different for this event. Between that and menu , we can discuss in further detail anytime. But I will definitely come find you next time your here.

peace

Hi Rosalie,
so glad to have you on board with the Kitchen this year. You are a goddess :-)

Yes, and your idea to offer a form of workshop is very fitting with our new theme. This and ideas for the menu are great suggestions which you and I will have to discuss.

We can do this in person (I live at 4Q) and or on this forum or email as you see fit. I will also get you access to the planning thread for this event. Nothing going on there yet....but it will be happening soon.

I look forward to having you on staff, for this event and the rest of the season.

peace

Chris,
I will be heading up the kitchen..... I would be very interesting in sitting down with you and your organizers to plan some menu ideas....... keeping in mind I like to do event appropriate menus.... to include open fire cooking like our ancestors would have.... anyone interested in learning how to do these things sign on to help in the kitchen ... you will not only cook but learn how your ancestors coped with cooking...... lots of things to learn....... It will be a great learning experience for all... Thanks much... let me know when you are planning and I will make it a point to attend....}

It's Tammie Ward and Danny Moses, concubines for nearly 13 years.

Tammie, spelled ie, not y!

Hi All,
So far we have Tammy and Danny Mosses who have committed. Jon Noll, Tim McGowan, Shiva and Michele, Patrick and Roxianne have also signed on. A couple of others have spoken with me and showed their interest in making this happen on other venues.

As Jon mentioned it will be held the last weekend of May '09. And there is room for other helpers in various capacities.

I am excited about the theme we will be heading with this year. 'Eco-Alchemy' is in large part an inspiration based on the general new direction for 4Q at large. As we begin to face the changes in our world of Climate changes, Financial problems, Pollution, and Fossil Fuel dependance, we can find answers inside those very problems.

Alchemy has allways been based on finding value in that which is seemingly worthless. The wise people of yesteryear called this "Turning Lead into Gold." And this is the basis for what we at 4Q will be beginning with this years Fire Rising as we begin our own version of the Fire Circle Alchemy called "Eco-Alchemy." The Fire Circle holds to a pseudo-community or fellowship in order to function. In truth it is based on the ancient practices of Third World peoples, and our ancestors as a format for exploring our human connection. It is no surprise then that it encompasses what being a human being is all about. Lets face it ....gathering around a fire is probably the first civilized act we as a people ever did!

"Whats this Eco Alchemy about," you say? We will be attempting to showcase Old World crafts like, Blacksmithing, Glass Blowing, and Metal Casting to name a few. These will be demonstrated on site and woven into the Ritual content of our Spiritual transcendental practice at the Fire Circle.

There will be interesting lectures on alternative Green living practices and a continuation of the format of Wellness and interdependance of the Alchemical Fire Circle . But it's not all planned out yet. With the help of a few dedicated people we will make this happen.

So I thank those who have stepped forward and ask for more to join in. Let us be the change we want to see in this world as we move on to not only survive, but to prosper physically and spiritually in the years to come.

So speak up and be heard....offer ideas and opinions as you see fit.

peace
Chris Fox Wallace

Maura,
The current (tentative) dates are Friday May 29 through Sunday May 31. I believe that with more interst and commitment to attend during those times, the less tentative they will become. :-)

Me and Kala will definitely be coming and excited about it! We'll be there at least a couple days early to help out (hopefully we'll be able to come to burn the wicker man the weekend before). We'll also be bringing lots of friends. :-)

HI All,
so far we have gotten emails from Tim McGowan, Tammy, and Jon.

Is there anyone else who is reading this that is interested in Helping to set up/break down, Planning, and possibly having a hand in this event?

I did see a post from Tara and Arlequine, concerning their interest. Perhaps they could explain what degree/form that interest takes?
This would be helpful :-)

Thanks
fox

Hey Fox,
I'll gladly make that commitment! I'll even up the ante and commit to being available the preceding Monday until the following Tuesday if we can muster enough support for a longer format!

Hi All,
What we need is for at least 5-6 people give a written commitment on this forum that they will....

1)Be willing to come a day or two before the event and help set up.
2)Be willing to take the time with break down and putting away decorations on the last day.

Please write in you official notice here if you are willing to help.

The date for this commitment would be for holding Fire Rising on May 29-31 2009.

Thank you,
fox

We have some new developments regarding the dates for Fires Rising!

To recap, we had a bad case of staff burnout with this event in 2008, falling as it does in a long stretch of weekends beginning with WickerMan and ending with Gaian Mind. The load on kitchen staff was particularly troubling.

Worse still, in 2010, we lose a weekend as Memorial Day moves around the calendar, resulting in there being no weekend into which to place the event!

Working on multiple fronts we may have a solution, emphasizing "may."

We have been in discussion with the folks of Crossing the Threasholds with the idea of their agreeing to hold both Thresholds and Fires Rising on the same weekend in 2010 and 2011, when we lose the extra weekend in the calendar. To their great credit, they have agreed!

Secondly, we are pleased to announce that we have secured the services of Rosalie, who many of you met at Samhain. Rosalie is a trained and experienced executive chef with years of experience with institutional food service and operating her own restaurant. We and she are thrilled.

But this still results in Fires Rising being held on the weekend after WickerMan, and frankly, live-in staff will be toast. So the last piece that is needed in order for this date to work, is to reduce live-in staff load. Suggestions are Fri-Sun format and a real commitment from facilitators and attendees to do the leg work.

Dates for Fires Rising are given as the Saturday of the weekend immediately following Memorial Day weekend and show years when the camp will be shared with Thresholds.

2009, Sat May 30

2010, Sat June 5; shared with Thresholds

2011 Sat June 4, shared with Thresholds

2112 Sat June 2

2113 Sat June 1

2114 Sat May 31

2115 Sat June 6, shared with Thresholds
*********
So to recap:

Kitchen load-solved;

Date conflict-solved;

staff load-unsolved;

The May date can be locked in IF we deal with staff load. So some folks have to focus on staff load and step-up!-smile. If folks want the extended original format, then even more folks have to make a commitment to arriving early for setup and staying late to clean up.
